Beginner user
A1
  • Can understand and use familiar essential expressions and key phrases to meet specific needs.
  • Can introduce themselves and others, ask questions of a personal nature (e.g. where they live, who they know, what things they have) and answer the same questions.
  • Can converse in a very simple way, as long as the interlocutor speaks slowly, clearly and is willing to help.
A2
  • Can understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to key areas of life (e.g. personal, family, shopping, local geography, work).
  • Can communicate in normal everyday situations about familiar things, when all they need to do is ask for or give information.
  • Can use simple language to talk about his/her education, immediate surroundings and basic needs.
Independent user
B1
  • Can understand the main points of clear texts about familiar things they encounter at work, school, on holiday, etc.
  • Can cope with most travel situations in the country where the target language is spoken.
  • Can communicate in most predictable situations in everyday life and some unexpected situations.
  • Can produce simple, coherent text on topics that are common or of interest to them.
  • Can describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes, wishes, briefly state reasons and explain opinions or plans.
B2
  • Able to understand the main ideas of complex texts on both concrete and abstract topics, as well as specialised discussions on professional topics.
  • Can communicate spontaneously and freely enough, both orally and in writing, so that communicating with native speakers without causing them tension and without feeling it themselves is quite possible.
  • Can produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of topics and explain his/her views on the issues at hand, outlining the advantages and disadvantages of different options.
